Title: Contested History and Failed Reform in the Moldovan Classroom: Notes from the Field

Abstract: With the assistance on an IREX fellowship, Dr. Anderson is currently conducting field research on history teaching in Moldova. Her present study follows up earlier ethnographic research from 2003 and 2004. Dr. Anderson will discuss her research and introduce some of her preliminary findings from this summer. In particular, she will discuss two overarching themes, which have emerged from her current field work: 1) the lack of commitment to reform by the MoE; and 2) overlapping narratives and identities in teachers' perceptions of national history.

Biographical information: Elizabeth A. Anderson earned her PhD in 2006 from New York University. She is an Assistant Professor of International Education at American University in Washington DC. Her research interests include: history and civic education, national identity and nationalism, education and democratization in new states, and multicultural education.
